IT 117: Intermediate to Scripting
Class 10 Exercise

Script for this exercise

Open a text editor
You can use the editor built into IDLE or use a program like Sublime.
Copy the text below into the file

Save the file as ex10.py
You cannot run this script on your machine
It can only be run on users3.cs.umb.edu

Unix setup

Log in to users3.cs.umb.edu
You will be in your home directory.
Go to your it117 directory
```
cd it117
```
Go to your ex directory
```
cd ex
```
Create a directory for this exercise
```
mkdir  ex10
```
Check that the directory was created
```
ls
```

Copy the file to Unix

Open FileZilla and connect to users3.cs.umb.edu
You will have to connect using your Unix username and password.
Copy the file to the to it117/ex/ex10

Testing the script on Unix

Connect to users3.cs.umb.edu
Use an ssh client.
Go to the directory for this exercise
```
cd  it117/ex/ex10
```
Make this script executable
```
chmod  755 ex10.py
```
Run this script
```
./ex10.py
```

You should see

sys.argv: ['./ex10.py']
Argument # 1 :	 ./ex10.py

Contents of /home/ghoffman/course_files/it117_files/ex10_test
file1.txt
file2.txt
file3.txt
file4.txt
file5.txt

shell is not an environment variable
SHELL: /bin/bash

Running my test script on your script

If you want to run my text script on your Class Exercise script do the following
Run ex10.sh on your script
```
~ghoffman/it117_test/ex10.sh
```
The script will prompt you for your Unix username.
